A string excitation model for audio synthesis of bowed string instruments

This disclosure describes a string excitation model, which is needed beside a string model and a model of the instrument body to build a physical model of a musical instrument for audio synthesis. This model was inspired by the self-similarity found by research into the lurches of objects sliding on an inclined surface. It amounts to generating a statistically self-similar pulse train.

This model has actually been implemented in my own audio processing toolkit (hackers only) since 2005 or so. But I did not write it up until now, not least because I was not aware of a way of preventing somebody else from patenting it.
